Why the Trust begins here.

CFAL started in 2004 with teenagers, and the problem became obvious quickly. By sixteen, most students had already learned to wait to be told. Curiosity was not missing; it had been trained out.

ELC opened in 2013 as the answer to how far back you would have to go. Age three, it turns out, with a playgroup below that for children taking their first steps away from home. A child who spends three years choosing work, finishing it, and correcting their own mistakes arrives at Grade 1 with something that is very hard to install later.

Three ages in one room.

Mixed-age classrooms are standard Montessori practice and rare in Mangaluru. Children of three, four and five share an environment for three years with the same guide. It works because of what it does to both ends of the room.

Arrives into a room already running. Learns by watching children a year ahead — which is more persuasive than any adult demonstration.
Four
The middle year. Consolidates, and begins to be the one who knows how something works.
Five
Teaches. Explaining a material to a three-year-old is the hardest test of whether you understand it, and it is where the confidence comes from.

A typical morning

What a morning looks like.

Focus
A long uninterrupted work period. Children choose their work and stay with it. The length of the period is the point — concentration takes time to build and a timetable that breaks every thirty minutes prevents it forming at all.
Materials
Materials that correct the child, not the adult. A cylinder that will not fit tells them more than a teacher saying "not quite," and it builds the habit of checking your own work.
Outdoors
Outdoors as part of the classroom. Growing things, observing them and looking after them is the first version of the scientific attention the Trust asks for at every later stage.
Observation
Adults who mostly watch. A guide's main work is observation — noticing what a particular child is ready for and when to step in, which is usually less often than instinct suggests.

Questions parents ask

What parents ask.

Will my child be behind in reading and writing?

No, though the sequence differs from a conventional preschool. Montessori children generally arrive at Grade 1 with strong phonetic foundations, and more importantly with the ability to work independently for long stretches — which is what the next ten years actually demand.

Does my child have to continue into TLC School?

No. ELC children go to schools across Mangaluru and do well. The continuity is available, not compulsory, and admission to Grade 1 is a separate decision made by you.

Is Montessori too unstructured?

It is the opposite of unstructured, which is a common misreading. The environment is highly ordered, the materials follow a precise sequence, and children choose within firm limits. What is absent is the adult deciding what all thirty children do in the next forty minutes.

What if my child joins at four or five rather than three?

Possible, subject to space, and worth discussing directly — a child joining later enters a room where the others have already settled, and how that goes depends on the child.
