NINE students undergoing training for IIT-JEE/AIEEE at Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL), Kuntikan Junction, Mangalore, are selected in the prestigious Olympiads leading to the international level. These students have proved that it is possible for students of Mangalore to be in the top 1% of the country’s most brilliant minds.

These  selected students are eligible to appear for the second stage of the examinations which will be held in the month of February. These examinations lead into international Olympiads.  In mathematics, the selected students will attend a training camp at Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore in the month of January to prepare for the second stage of examination.

 

There were no selections from Mangalore for Olympiads.   From  2009, for the first time three students of Mangalore were selected (2 in  mathematics and one in chemistry). In 2012, this number has reached nine. All these students are/were undergoing IT-JEE/AIEEE training at Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL), Kuntikan, Mangalore.

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science education is the nodal centre of the country for Olympiad programmes.   www.hbcse.tifr.res.in/olympiads   The Olympiads Examinations are conducted in subjects, physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and astronomy. The broad goals are to promote equity and excellence in science and mathematics education from primary school to undergraduate college level, and encourage the growth of scientific literacy in the country. 

FIRST STAGE:

National Standard Examinations (NSEP in Physics, NSEC in Chemistry, NSEB in Biology, NSEA in Astronomy ) are nationwide examinations organized by IAPT.  NSEP, NSEC, NSEB and NSEA are at CBSE class XII level.  These NSEs are the FIRST and THE ONLY SCREENING TESTS leading towards International Olympiads in the respective subjects.

Eligibility for NSEs : ( NSEP, NSEC, NSEB  & NSEA) – Stage I: All Indian students who are within the specified age group and who are in Class XII or lower are eligible to appear for NSE.

SECOND  STAGE:

If they qualify in the NSE they will be eligible to appear for Indian National Olympiads (INOs) organised by HOMI BABHA CENTRE FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION.

THIRD STAGE:

On the basis of performance in INOs, the top 35 students in the merit list in each subject will be selected for Stage III. That is, Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in respective discipline for about 2 weeks at HOMI BHABHA CENTRE FOR  SCIENCE EDUCATION (hbcse) . The merit list of OCSC will be prepared on the basis of the combined theoretical and experimental score aggregated over all the tests in the camp, with 60% weightage for theory and 40% weightage for experiment. The top 6 in the OCSC merit list will be declared to be special merit awardees. These 6 special merit awardees selected at the end of the OCSC will constitute the 6 member student team for the International Olympiad (IO).

FOURTH STAGE

Stage IV is Pre-departure Training (PDT) Camp for IO. The selected 6 member student team will undergo a rigorous training programme at HBCSE in theory and experiment. Special laboratories are being developed at HBCSE for the purpose of experimental training.

FINAL STAGE

Stage V is Participation in International Olympiad (IO)  by these 6 member student team and three teacher leaders. They constitute the delegation to represent India at the International Olympiad(IO).
